(It actually does sound kinda fun don’t you think?)
OK I’ve tried it every which way but loose in recent years, but I still sometimes get overwhelmed with my to-do tasks when I’m in the office.
Is it just me or does there honestly seem to be less time to get things done these days? And it certainly doesn’t help when everything suddenly seems to be high up on the agenda of priorities.
I’ve tried to have a structured list however, as life gets more hectic, it kept on getting longer and longer with fewer things getting crossed off.
My heart would sink with how much more there was to do.
I tried putting up post it notes with 1 task on them around my desk and immediately felt they were glaring at me accusingly from the walls.
Not to mention the ones that gave up on their stickiness and had to be retrieved from under furniture when a phone call prompted a search.
I’ve tried to take only a few things off the master list per day and concentrate on getting those done alone.
This worked to some extent but telephone calls coming in on other jobs, or a new client calling (and they always get top priority) would send this method spinning straight into pressure territory.
It may also be my age, however I’m finding that a lot more appears to need far more concentration to ensure it’s done right.
By the time late afternoon rolls in my brain has packed up and gone AWOL even though my body is still seated at my desk.
Then, chatting with a friend, we came up with the new idea of a To-Do Tombola.
Taking each post it note task, folding them and putting this in a bowl, bucket or receptacle, swishing them around and picking 1 out per day to work on. OK, urgent tasks would need a different colour to the rest so they stand out and don’t get missed however there’s plenty of more mundane jobs where this could work.
It actually does sound kinda fun don’t you think?
I’m even working out how to spin or tumble whatever I can find to test this out on, and may even develop an adapted bingo calling for each task. Anything that will make a long list of chores, tasks and jobs more fun.
Imagine the sense of anticipation every morning when you have no idea what you might be working on that day until you Tombola it on to your desk.
