Embrace an alternative beat, and create a more fulfilling and harmonious work life balance.
I wrote last time about how time seems to have speeded up and the constant racing against the clock we all do, ending the day feeling drained and overwhelmed. It’s a problem for both our productivity and also our well-being. Many of us can relate to the pressures and stress that come with the traditional 9-to-5(or more) workday. But what if there’s a better way to structure our time and reclaim our sanity?
Throughout June I’ve been conducting a personal experiment and made some radical changes to my working days when I am in the office, implementing a split-day routine. The results have been remarkable:
Picture this: waking up and diving into work by 6am, fully focused and energised. By 10 am, you’ve accomplished a significant amount, and instead of pushing yourself further, you take a break. Four hours to do whatever you please.
It might sound unconventional, but I found, this new way of structuring my workday has brought immense benefits.
I work intensively from 6 am to 10 am and then force myself to take a four-hour break (partly for the obvious ablutions). During this time, I allow myself time to unwind, pursue personal interests, or simply relax and recharge. Returning to work from 2 pm to 6 pm, I find myself more focused and motivated than ever.
The results have been astounding. By embracing this revised structure for three days a week (typically Tues-Thurs when not out and about), I have found my productivity soaring. I have achieved more in those focused hours than I have in years of adhering to a traditional schedule. Surprisingly, I have also experienced reduced stress levels and a newfound sense of balance.
But how does this unconventional approach lead to greater productivity and overall well-being? By giving myself dedicated breaks, I believe I allow my mind and body to rejuvenate. This period of rest and rejuvenation enables me to return to the office with fresh perspectives and renewed energy. I tackle tasks with increased efficiency and creativity, resulting in higher-quality outputs.
Moreover, by implementing this new schedule for only three days a week, I have the freedom to pursue other interests on the remaining days when not off gigging.
I’m no longer burdened by a constant feeling of obligation, granting myself time for personal growth, leisure activities, or spending quality moments with other people. This newfound work-life balance has had a transformative effect on my overall happiness and well-being.
The benefits have also extended beyond my work-related aspects. By ending my office workday at 6 pm, I find myself less drained and exhausted in the evenings. This opens up opportunities for a revitalised social life and improved relationships. Better sleep has become a reality, as I no longer carry the weight of work-related stress to bed. It was a holistic transformation that has touched all aspects of my life.
Of course, this approach may not be suitable for everyone, as work environments and responsibilities vary. However, it serves as a valuable reminder to question and challenge traditional work structures. By reassessing how we allocate our time, we can unlock a more efficient, balanced, and fulfilling way of working.
Restructuring our working day can yield remarkable results. Embracing a split-day routine, I discovered increased productivity, reduced stress levels, and a healthier work-life balance. If nothing else my experience serves as a reminder for all of us to question the status quo and find alternative approaches that align with our unique needs. I know, for me, this new structure suits my rhythm so well I’ll be keeping the tempo going.
